Mahrez caught in alleged doping scandal, Algerian used “unknown medication” during AFCON

Riyad Mahrez scored Algeria’s winning goal against Nigeria in the semi-final of the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, but 24 days later reports in England are suggesting he might have used a banned substance.

Per Stuart Brennan [Manchester Evening News], Mahrez took something to help with a sinus problem.

The player himself reported he had taken “unknown medication while on international duty.”

According to the report, City have declared the doping claims as a “no issue”, although the 28 year-old was dropped from the Community Shield match against Liverpool “simply to avoid the possibility of him falling foul of post-match dope-testing.”

The Algerian FA also cleared their name of any wrong doing, claiming per Brennan it is a “non-event”.

Meanwhile, the Player is now a doubt for Manchester City’s opening PL match against West Ham as a precaution.

Doping experts claim the medication, depending on what it was, could stay in his system for more than a week – and that could force City to consider his place in the squad for Saturday’s trip to West Ham.

World Anti Doping Agency rules prevent several sinus and eye treatments to be used outside competition.

No doors Closed Yet! Lampard sends Omeruo green light

Chelsea have conceded 9 goals in six pre-season friendlies and it’s a defensive frailty that bothers Manager Frank Lampard, who expressed need to improve on it.

Lampard’s reassurance that ‘no doors are closed yet’ on any player – including Nigeria’s Kenneth Omeruo – yet to get game time under his watch ahead of Chelsea’s PL opening day fixture against Manchester United.

The Chelsea Boss only has three first team Center backs available for the August 11 fixture at Old Trafford, but has the option of bringing Omeruo – whose future is undecided – on board.

Speaking after Chelsea’s latest pre-season win against RB Salzburg on Wednesday, the Blues’ Gaffer said.

‘The fact that there were goals at both ends tells the story. Great attacking line from us. It’s a concern we conceded, but we have time to improve on that.’

‘We have a squad with a lot of players and getting to this point now, I can’t bring everyone and give everyone 90 minutes so there are players who have stayed back to train rather than travel and not play.

‘So I would not read too much into it in one game, we are a work in progress with this squad.’
